Wooden Instrument and Case, 2024
This 8-string experimental instrument draws inspiration from the forms and sonic traditions of the zhongruan and guqin. Its back is made from red rosewood, while the soundboard is crafted from paulownia wood. Currently fitted with guitar strings, the instrument allows for flexible string replacement and open-ended tuning exploration.
Without a conventional fixed bridge, its playing method moves away from traditional instrumental techniques, leaning instead toward the tactile and exploratory approach of the guqin. A 1/4-inch output allows the instrument to be connected to effects pedals, further expanding its sonic possibilities. Under certain tunings, multiple overtones emerge and resonate simultaneously, creating rich layers of sound. Beyond the strings, the soundboard itself can also be played as a percussion surface, allowing the instrument to function as a drum.
